Jennifer,

Each person is different. I didn't have the bypass, I had the band. For me I was back to normal in 2 days. Someone else I know, who had the same operation, took a week. And someone else took two weeks.

I know people who had the bypass. Some were up and around in 3 days. Others took weeks. One person I know is still having issues, and it's been about 2 months.

At the time, I postponed my operation until January because I was afraid it would ruin the holidays. I was wrong, and I was upset because in hindsight I knew I should have the operation in November.

No one can say for sure how YOU will react to the operation. Looking at the average, you should be ok. But only you know you.

Help deciding on Date for bypass???

Hi everyone! I have struggled w/ obesitiy as a child and then again in my late teens through adulthood. I have finally made the tough decision to have gastric bypass b/c i don't want to follow in my father's footsteps. He died 2 years ago at 64 of a heart attack, had diabetes, CHF, HTN and was obese.

I was surprised when I met with the Dr. that my insurance moved so quickly and I can get the procedure on November 9th!! I am ready, the only thing I am goind to Disney in Florida on December 14th. I want everyone's HONEST opinion on how they felt a month after surgery??? Could you walk around Disney?? I know I could potentially be 30-50 lbs lighter, which would help.

But I could also be in pain or have complications a month later??? Would it be wiser to put the surgery off until I come back, which would make it in January??

Any input would be great!! thanks so much!! Jennifer

So, I now have my answer. I can pay $60 for the fluoro at the hospital OR pay $200 for the in-office adjustment. No brainer - I would rather have the fluoro anyway, so I am very happy :)

 Oxford Insurance & Fills

I have been trying to get answers from the office for a week now, but no luck. I can't seem to get a quick reply or a consistent story.

I have Oxford Insurance and was recently informed that my fills under fluoro at a hospital will no longer be covered because they will not cover the doctors as certified or experts in radiology. Fine, so the alternative is to my fills from here on in at the office, but I had to wait until the person I spoke with could confirm with the doctor that this was the approach they wanted to take. No problem so far . . . except the next time that I called they told me that I would have to pay $200 for my fills because they would likely not be covered at all. Oh, and then the person tells me that if I would like to wait until the new center opens, then they might be covered there. When I asked what the difference was between the new center and the hospital, she said that she had to confirm with someone else. What is going on???

Does anyone have Oxford and know exactly what the deal is here? I would hate to have to find another doc at this point because I really love all of the docs, but I can't seem to get answers to what would seem like basic questions for a bariatric practice. Sorry for the vent - this is just frustrating.

Hi Jerseygirl,

Sorry about the inconvience but the Bayonne Seminars will no longer be taking place. Call the office and speak to Nino and he can try to fit you in to another seminar. We actually have a seminar this Wednesday evening at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Mt. Olive, NJ (exit 26 I think) off Rt. 80. There is also a seminar this Thursday night at HOLY NAME HOSP. in Teaneck, NJ... this is exit 70B off Rt. 80. Both seminars begin at 7pm. Next Wed. we will also have a seminar in the Doctor's Office at 7pm in Florham Park.

I'm sure Nino can fit you into one of those. I work in the office P/T, am also a Gastric Bypass Patient and run the support groups at some of the seminars. So if you have any other questions ask away! My name is Pat and you can always reach me here or in the office at 973-410-9700 or at patc@alsnj.com

Well I had my surgery on April 6,2004 and well that was the day my rebirth began!!
The day of my surgery I weighed 443 pounds!!!
Today I'm 140!!!
I had a rough 1st year, what could go wrong did, infections, umbilical hernia, gallbladder and an ulcer that got perforated BUT I would do it again in a NY Minute!!...DR's Bertha & Abkin were there for me every step of the way and well they saved my life!!!
I neva felt better in my life!!!...Im gonna be 48 and well am doing things that I neva did before and I thank them for that...
I still have a hard time with lots of food but I'll take it any day over being 443...
Since I had my surgery a few of my family members & friends also had it done and are feeling great!!!
So if anyone is out there thinking of it having the surgery...just do it!!! Was the best thing I eva did and I again thank the Dr's for that, they are the Best!!!!!
And now every April 6th I celebrate my re-birthday cause that's what it is!!!

Joynucci,

It always amazes me how people (especially medically trained individuals) can be so ignorant concerning weight loss. Don’t they think that we haven’t tried “watching what we eat”? If it was THAT simple there would be NO FAT people in the world.

I was banded almost 20 months ago, and I have not regretted a single day. I have lost 180 pounds, and couldn’t be happier. And I would do it again if needed.

I will be honest with you, while the band DOES HELP (immensely) , you will still need to watch what you eat, you will need some will-power (but it’s sooooo much easier), and you will need to do some form of exercise (even if it’s only walking from the furthest spot in the parking lot).

In addition, depending on your diabetes the bypass may be a better choice for you. That decision will need to be made between you and the Doctor.

Feel free to send me a personal email if you have any other questions. I am here to help you !!

Good luck to you !!
